Tres artefactos explosivos fueron detectados este martes en distintos puntos claves de Londres. El hallazgo se produjo por el cuerpo antiterrorista de la policía, que fue advertida en horas del mediodía por la presencia de paquetes sospechosos en los aeropuertos de Heathrow y London City y en la estación de metro de Waterloo.

Mediante un comunicado, las autoridades detallaron: “El Mando Antiterrorista de la Policía Metropolitana ha iniciado una investigación después de que tres paquetes sospechosos llegaran a diversos edificios en Londres. Los paquetes —todos ellos con la forma de una bolsa postal blanca tamaño DIN-A4, y que contenían sobres de papel marrón con burbujas— han resultado ser pequeños artefactos explosivos improvisados, según el análisis de los agentes especialistas”.

Al menos dos de los tres paquetes tenían sellos irlandeses por lo que la policía de ese país se encuentra colaborando con la investigación. Las tensiones en torno al Brexit, y sobre todo la posibilidad de que pudiera reinstaurarse una “frontera dura” entre las dos Irlandas si no prospera finalmente el backstop (salvaguarda) impuesto por Bruselas, han desatado los nervios de los llamados “disidentes”, republicanos norirlandeses radicales que no aceptaron nunca los acuerdos de paz.

El primer paquete fue descubierto a las 09.55 hora local (10.55 hora peninsular española) en el aeropuerto de Heathrow. La Policía Metropolitana recibió una llamada desde el Compass Centre, un edificio de oficinas en las instalaciones aeroportuarias donde se encuentra la sede central de la compañía que dirige las instalaciones. “El personal de la oficina abrió el paquete y provocó su ignición. Como resultado, parte del paquete estaba quemado”, han explicado las autoridades. Nadie ha resultado herido.

El segundo paquete fue localizado en torno a las 12.40 (hora local) en las dependencias postales de la estación de metro de Waterloo, cercanas a una parada de taxis. No llegó a ser abierto.

El tercero se encontró en las oficinas centrales del aeropuerto City of London y los especialistas policiales se hicieron cargo del incidente. Tampoco en este caso se abrió el paquete.

Los responsables de la investigación, según Sky News, trabajan sobre los tres incidentes como una “serie de hechos vinculados”, aunque se “mantienen abiertos a todas las posibilidades en cuanto a los motivos que pueda haber detrás de estos actos”.
